Volunteers are an essential part of how Gleaners can distribute emergency food to five counties in southeast Michigan every year. Annually, more than 48,000 volunteers contribute to our cause.
Fresh Food Share (FFS) provides affordable access to fresh produce, increased nutrition knowledge and support for local farms in Michigan. Customers purchase pre-made boxes of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables at community sites.
Volunteers pack boxes for monthly delivery for customer pick up at that sites. A newsletter with recipes and information is included in the box. Purchase can be made via check, Pay Pal, SNAP, and money order. Michigan produce is eligible for Double Up Food Bucks June through October.
There are three types of boxes and contents vary according to the seasons. Staples like potatoes, carrots, onions, salad green, and cooking greens are regularly included. The boxes contain produce commonly used in everyday recipes.
There are currently more than two dozen sites. Sites can operate as open or closed sites. Closed sites serve their own clients or customers. Open sites are open to surrounding communities. Individuals can order boxes through these open sites.
