At Gleaners, we believe that raising awareness through our education programs and outreach into the community is key to fulfilling our mission. Gleaners’ education and outreach programs promote hunger awareness and community involvement in the solution to hunger among both children and adults. Gleaners also teaches courses that help low-income families get the most nutritional value out of limited resources. The following are just a few examples of our education and outreach programs:
Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ is a groundbreaking nutrition-education program that connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that show adults, teens and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe and tasty ways. This knowledge can mean the difference between feeding families just for one night, and making sure they never again have to worry about when their next meal will come.
Kids Helping Kids® invites students to Gleaners to learn the importance of good nutrition, hunger awareness, and volunteerism. Over the years, KHK has introduced thousands of school-aged children to community service benefitting southeast Michigan.
Students begin their visit with an introduction to the history to the food bank, a tour of the warehouse, a half-hour nutrition education session, followed by a hands-on volunteer experience that supports Gleaners' mission. In addition to the traditional KHK opportunities for groups offered at our Detroit, Pontiac and Warren facilities, Gleaners is also pleased to offer a Family Day for individual families to join KHK groups every third Saturday of each month at the Detroit warehouse.
The Speakers Bureau is a group of volunteers who represent Gleaners at various events. We count on our Speakers Bureau to let people understand how their support helps us nourish communities by feeding hungry people in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne counties. Our goal is to help more members of the community get a better understanding of:
