Harvest Spring 2012 - Canstruction, October 2011
Detroit area architects and design students came together for Canstruction, a design competition where colossal sculptures created entirely of cans provide food and awareness to combat hunger. Kroger seeded the “design materials”, giving each of the eight participating teams Kroger gift cards loaded with $1,200. The sculptures were on display at the Detroit Institute of Art from October 26-30th, after which all cans were donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank to feed hungry neighbors throughout southeast Michigan.
Prior to this year’s event, a Canstruction competition had not been held in Detroit since 2002. The event was revived locally thanks to architect, Danielle O’Neal. “I first saw pictures of Canstruction entries that my college classmates had completed and was shocked that the competition was not in Detroit,” she shared.

“It’s not just art, but the inspiration to support the community and make an awareness,” expressed Rachel Falcone, Captain of Albert Kahn’s Canstruction team, whose iconic sculpture of a Vernors bottle and bag of Better Maid chips won two of the four competition honors, including Judges' Favorite and Best Structural Ingenuity.
University of Detroit Mercy team competitor, Lisa Kulawczyk said, “It (canstruction) will let people know who Gleaners is and show that you can do a fundraising event that is creative… As architecture students we think we have skill that can benefit the community in a unique way.”
Anne Cox, architect for Albert Kahn, shared the sentiment, “Canstruction is one of a variety of things that can raise more funds and reach out to the community in a different way; and DIA is such a public venue… This is one of our ways to get involved, and maybe they (viewers) will think, ‘How can I get involved?’.”
