Pat Taylor Braxton discovered Fresh Food Share while bringing her 85-year-old mother, who has Alzheimer’s, to Hannan House in Detroit for social activities.
“The program has benefitted me tremendously, and because I’m a caregiver – I cook for my mom and have to guarantee she gets five to nine fresh fruits and vegetables a day,” she says.

Like many families, Roseville residents Nicole and David Jenkins have been struggling through the economic downturn. Nicole is a stay-at-home mom of two sons, while David works in shipping and receiving at a steel manufacturing company.

“Mitch” works two jobs to support the family: at a department store during the day and cleaning banks at night. He and his wife “Laura” live in Howell, and she came to the Shared Harvest Pantry run by Gleaners for the first time last spring. She ended up at the pantry because the family’s monthly budget could not stretch to cover basic expenses.

A wife and mother of three children, Candice Rich was certain no one could tell her anything new about cooking and shopping. But a Cooking Matters™ class offered through her daughter’s Head Start program showed her new techniques for stretching her food dollars that made it more economical to feed her family.

In the heart of Midtown Detroit, St. Patrick Senior Center provides hot meals to approximately 200 seniors, seven days per week. The noon meal not only nourishes aging adults, but also offers the opportunity for social interaction, an important part of sustaining self-sufficiency and independence for seniors.
