During a meeting, the young ladies of Girl Scout Heart of Michigan Troop #41213 approached their Troop Leaders Anne Barlow and Dorene Blain with an exciting idea. “Our young ladies knew about the important work that Gleaners does and shared that they wanted a big portion of their cookie sales to be donated to further support feeding hungry families,” shared Anne.
These young ladies came up with the idea after they had spent a few visits volunteering at Gleaners events and packing meals for hungry kids for our BackPack program. During their visits they learned about the importance of nutrition and the realization that not every kid is fortunate to know where their next meal is coming from. When one in four Michigan children often miss meals, these young ladies knew they had to do something.
For a few months the troop worked to sell as many boxes of cookies as they could in hopes of impacting their community in a positive way. Once they completed their sales, they made a trip to our Taylor Distribution Center to drop off their donation. “Our sixth through eighth grade cadets were so excited to bring their money down to Gleaners,” shared Anne. “We are very proud of them for coming up with this idea on their own.”
