Empty Bowls

A potter assists school age participants (ages 6 – 17) in making one clay bowl to take home and one to donate to the food bank to be used at an Empty Bowls fundraiser to help feed hungry neighbors. This fun filled day takes place at our Detroit Distribution Center. To participate in Empty Bowls, a $5 donation to cover the program costs for each participant, paid in advance is requested.

Empty Bowls sessions are held every Saturday from 9am – 11:30am or 1pm - 3:30pm. Group Size should be 10 – 16, which includes one adult chaperone for every 10 children.

Contact Reggie Williams at rwilliams@gcfb.org or call 866-GLEANER, ext 231, to schedule a session.

Cooking Matters™

Cooking Matters logo 2011

Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ is a groundbreaking nutrition-education program that connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that show adults, teens and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe and tasty ways. This knowledge can mean the difference between feeding families just for one night, and making sure they never again have to worry about when their next meal will come.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact the Cooking Matters™ coordinator at 313-923-3535 ext 202 or rblauw@gcfb.org.

Fresh Food Share

Fresh Food Share

Several volunteer opportunities are available for the Fresh Food Share Program, a neighborhood produce delivery program that serves Detroit communities:

Volunteers are needed at our Warren location to assist in packing boxes of fresh produce one Wednesday a month from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. and one Thursday a month between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.

We also have a need for volunteers to be trained as experts and advocates for the Fresh Food Share program. Once trained, these volunteers would meet with Detroit Public Schools and other community sites to help increase awareness of the program by meeting with site coordinators, speaking at staff meetings, parent meetings, and helping to ensure posters are up and reminder flyers and emails are distributed.

For information about volunteering for Fresh Food Share, contact FreshFoodShare@gcfb.org or visit the Fresh Food Share Program page.

Snap Outreach

Gleaners is looking for volunteers to disperse SNAP info at local farmers markets, Gleaners mobile pantry sites and other community locations. For more information, contact Winona at wbynum@gcfb.org or (313)923-3535, ext. 265.

DTE Energy logo - no background

DTE Energy Farm

The DTE Energy Farm is dedicated to providing fresh, local fruits and vegetables to our community's hungry people. Through the combined efforts of Gleaners Community Food Bank, DTE Energy, and our dedicated volunteers, the DTE Energy Farm works to fill that gap.

"Open House" Volunteer Days
Volunteers meet every week during “open house” hours. Registration and previous gardening experience are not required. We encourage volunteers to stop by at any time during these Weekly Volunteer Days, and stay for any length of time. All ages are welcome. Volunteer days are cancelled in the event of rain, or temperatures above 90 degrees.

Click here to sign-up for a weekly "open house" volunteer opportunity.

Group Work Days
We are happy to accommodate any group with an interest in volunteering outside the set "Open House" Volunteer Days.

Partner Agency Volunteers

More than 510 soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, disaster relief agencies and other nonprofit organizations rely on food from Gleaners to meet their clients’ needs.

Like Gleaners, these partner agencies need the help of volunteers to keep their operations running smoothly so that they can help feed our hungry neighbors.
