Gleaners Community Food Bank partners with local schools to end child hunger one school at a time. Food is distributed year-round, including summer months when the risk of child hunger is at its greatest.
Gleaners school-based mobile pantry program is a highly efficient distribution model that targets families with young children residing in high-need communities. Each monthly distribution serves up to 200 families, providing them with 35-50 pounds of protein, produce and non-perishable pantry products. The SBMP program launched in April of 2011 with five sites; Gleaners now serves 60 sites, serving 9,000 families monthly.
Gleaners BackPack program provides weekend meals to children who receive free or reduced lunches in school. Each BackPack supplies a minimum of six balanced meals. More info →
SmartBites provides schools with healthy snacks to distribute to hungry students during the school day or at after school tutoring programs. Currently, schools participating in the program receive 60-240 bags per month. Each bag is filled with 30-36 items, including granola bars, cereal and fruit cups. More info →
The Hunger Free Summer campaign (HFS) provides summer meals to children who would receive free or reduced-fee meals during the school year. Distribution is made possible through school-based mobile pantries, BackPacks, the Summer Feeding Service Program (providing nutritous lunches Monday-Friday while school is out), and agency partnerships. Hunger Free Summer is supported through a matching gift campaign in which corporate partners, including Charter One Foundation, match public contributions. More info →
