2023 Hunger Action Month!

Every September, Gleaners joins Feeding America’s network of food banks across the country to recognize Hunger Action Month, an effort to raise awareness about food insecurity and share ways to help eliminate hunger.

Locally, an increasing number of families struggle to put meals on the table every day. Many of our senior neighbors make difficult decisions to purchase either food or essential medications. Every school in our service territory – covering Wayne, Oakland, Monroe, Macomb and Livingston counties – has kids that don’t have enough to eat. It doesn’t have to be that way.

This Hunger Action Month, join Gleaners in the movement to solve hunger by sharing your time and resources to help end food insecurity in Southeast Michigan.

Here are some ways YOU can make a difference:

  • Know someone who may need food? Tell them about our Community Mobile Food Distribution events. Every day, Monday through Friday, anyone in need can drive up and receive ~30 pounds of food. These events vary in location and are free and open to the public.  Check out the schedule of upcoming distributions at PantryNet.org.
  • Double your impact to Gleaners during the Mow Down Hunger match, happening September 5 through Oct. 11, 2023. During this time, Weingartz is matching all donations to Gleaners, up to 1 million meals! Every $1 you donate will be matched to provide SIX meals! Donate before Oct. 11 to help us provide twice the impact for local kids and families.
  • Volunteer with us! Gleaners has volunteer opportunities for individuals, families and groups. This month, we are especially in need of people to help pack food boxes at our warehouse in Taylor and assist guests at the Mercado Food Pantry in Southwest Detroit. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially helpful!  Visit our website to view current opportunities and sign up to help.
  • You can support a food drive! Gleaners has a dedicated team to help you get the most out of your giving experience. You can help donate or collect nonperishable food items for our neighbors facing hunger, and we are here to customize the perfect option for you! To get started, please contact Bob Irland, Community Giving Manager, at Bob Irland.
  • Follow us on social media! We’re on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter. Help us spread the word about Gleaners’ efforts to feed people and nourish lives. Like and share our social media posts to help us reach as many people as possible. Use the hashtag #HungerActionMonth to join the nationwide conversation about solving hunger!

This September, commit to taking action on behalf of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Every action you take to help create hunger-free communities makes a difference in the effort to solve food insecurity now and for the future. Be a part of the solution today!
