April Double Your Donation Day: Powered By Food

We’re pleased to report that our Powered By Food Double Your Donation Day was a success! Thanks to our generous supporters—and the match provided by PNC Bank—donations made twice the impact, helping provide healthy meals for kids and families across Southeast Michigan.

We kicked things off bright and early with Michael Bickers, Regional President of PNC Bank—our Powered By Food presenting sponsor. Live on FOX 2, Michael shared why solving hunger is an important initiative for PNC and why the bank continues to stand with Gleaners year after year. His message set the tone for a day filled with community spirit and generosity.

Our very own, President and CEO, Gerry Brisson, joined the broadcast next to echo Michael’s message and highlight the power of giving: every $1 donated on this special day provided six meals. He reminded viewers that while federal food programs fluctuate, Gleaners’ commitment to our community never wavers. Gerry’s message was hopeful, inspiring, and clear—hunger doesn’t pause, and neither do we.

Mid-morning, we were treated to a fun and practical cooking demo from Emily Lesky, Gleaners’ Nutrition Education Coordinator. Emily showed viewers how to make mini pizzas—an easy, kid-friendly recipe that’s perfect for quick meals and teaching healthy habits at home.

From there, our lineup turned the spotlight on our incredible partners and community advocates:

  • Rev. Roslyn Bouier, Executive Director of Brightmoor Connection, shared the incredible work happening in her community—from providing 50–70 pounds of food each month through a client-choice pantry, to launching transitional housing and a co-op daycare. Her passion and authenticity made a powerful case for continued support.
  • McKenzie Looney, a teacher at Holy Family Regional School, brought along two enthusiastic students to share how their virtual food drive raised over $17,000—an impressive $4,000 increase from last year. Their friendly competition and dedication were nothing short of inspiring.
  • Longtime volunteer Dave Zarek and Sandy Laemmel from the United States Postal Service highlighted the upcoming Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Since 2010, this incredible partnership has brought over 14.3 million pounds of food to Gleaners and our neighbors—proof of what’s possible when a community rallies together.
  • Kelli Phillips-Herrick from Center Line Public Schools closed out the morning with a look at how their monthly School Food Mobile and student-led fundraisers, like the “Empty Bowl” soup and ceramics sale, are making a difference. With over $2,000 raised and students learning firsthand about food insecurity and nonprofit work, Center Line is helping shape a generation of hunger-solvers.

From heartfelt stories to hands-on demonstrations, this year’s Double Your Donation Day was full of hope, action, and community. Thanks again to PNC Bank and our other generous sponsors for making this match possible—and to everyone who tuned in, called in, or gave online. You helped fuel a brighter future for our neighbors.
