Dresner Foundation Awards Gleaners with $60,000 Grant

(Detroit, MI – March 30, 2018) … Gleaners Community Food Bank (Gleaners) has received a $60,000 grant from the Dresner Foundation (Dresner) allowing the organization to expand their School Food Mobile Pantry Program. Currently serving 79 schools, funds from the grant will pay for program locations at five additional schools.

Gleaners’ School Food Mobile Pantry Program brings emergency food directly to schools for distribution to low-‐income students and their families. Each monthly distribution provides 100 families with approximately 30 pounds of nutritious food including approximately 17 pounds of fresh produce and 13 pounds of other healthy pantry staples.

Nearly 300,000 southeast Michigan children receive free or reduced-‐fee meals at school.

Gleaners’ Mobile Pantry Program allows partners to target areas of need where access to healthy food is scarce. The program also delivers nutrition education in the form of cooking demonstrations and literature about healthy ways to prepare food.

The Dresner Foundation supports organizations that empower children and helps to optimize their development by providing access to programs that promote academic, artistic, personal and social enhancement opportunities. The foundation works with organizations that support youth through the provision of services that strengthen their families such as work skill development, housing, and family food assistance operations.
