Why give to Gleaners

Gleaners is the largest, most comprehensive service organization working to alleviate hunger in Southeast Michigan. Over the last four decades, Gleaners’ food distribution has grown from 537,462 pounds in 1977 to more than 50 million pounds in our fiscal year 2023. Headquartered in Detroit, Gleaners also operates facilities in Howell and Taylor. We are supported by a dedicated team of over 100 staff and thousands of volunteers.

Creative solutions for ending hunger

In instances where serious gaps in service exist, Gleaners has stepped in to develop creative solutions. Gleaners operates over 20 Community Mobiles across Southeast Michigan, strategically located throughout our five-county service area to meet our hungry neighbors where they are, addressing the greatest areas of need. These sites, operating on a rotating basis five days per week, offer balanced nutrition – including fresh milk, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean protein, and shelf-stable items – with no appointment necessary, built on a “no contact” drive-through model. Additionally, Gleaners works with schools to operate School Food Mobile distributions to ensure students and school families have enough nutritious food to eat at home, Veteran Mobiles to help feed those who bravely served, and Senior Mobiles conveniently located at senior living complexes, co-ops, and activity centers.
