Cooking Matters

Cooking Matters is a cooking-based nutrition education class powered by volunteers and their passion for the communities we serve.

Culinary and nutrition professionals volunteer their time and expertise to lead lessons, while class assistants support both the instruction and participant engagement. Each class features a hands-on cooking activity designed to teach the basics of healthy eating, nutrition, food safety, cooking skills, and food budgeting to individuals at risk of hunger.

We're always looking for new volunteers to help us connect with the community and expand our program to reach more of our neighbors.

New Volunteers

Before new volunteers can register for a class series, they must attend a New Volunteer Orientation and Training session.

Volunteer opportunities for Cooking Matters classes include:

Culinary Instructors
Teach adults, kids, and teens how to cook healthy, low-cost meals using the lesson plans and recipes provided in the Cooking Matters curriculum.
Culinary instructors are typically either enrolled in or graduates of a two-year culinary training program, or have at least two years of experience working as a cook or chef.

Nutrition Instructors
Lead lessons that help adults, kids, and teens use critical thinking to make healthy food choices, using materials from the Cooking Matters and Food Smarts curricula. Nutrition instructors are usually enrolled in or graduates of a nutrition, food science (NFS), or dietetics program, or currently working in the field.

Class Assistants
Support instructors and facilitators with classroom setup, food prep, class activities, and cleanup. No experience necessary!
