Youth Opportunities

Gleaners welcomes the energy and enthusiasm of youth volunteering to help ensure all families in southeastern Michigan have access to the food they need for happy, healthy, hopeful lives.

Kids Helping Kids at Gleaners

Youth learn about hunger and nutrition as well as volunteer on a project that will help their hungry peers. Volunteer tasks include sorting and packing food, preparing supplies for food drives and more. Up to 30 youth needed per shift.

Kids Helping Kids in the Classroom

We bring Gleaners to the classroom during this impactful 60 minute program. Youth learn about Gleaners’ mission, hunger, and the act of volunteerism through a short presentation and engaging activity.

Detroit Food Zoo Garden

Detroit Food Zoo is a learning garden with exhibits that show different ways to garden creatively, including a pizza garden, salad bar garden, salsa garden, even a garden in a grocery cart! Youth learn about hunger and nutrition as well as help to plant, weed, water and harvest. Up to 20 volunteers needed per shift.

Sat kindergarten and up

Empty Bowls

Youth participants work with a potter to make one clay bowl to take home and one to donate for use at an Empty Bowls fundraiser to help feed hungry neighbors. Up to 16 youth may participate per session.

While the above volunteer events are youth-focused, some adult events have limited opportunities for youth to participate as well.

Distribution Centers

Youth ages 10 and older may participate as part of a group of adults. Youth ages 14 and older may participate as a group, with certain restrictions.

My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery

Youth ages 14 and older may participate with certain restrictions.

Livingston Victory Garden

Youth ages 10 and older may participate as part of a group of adults. Youth ages 14 and older may participate as a group, with certain restrictions.

Food Pantries

Youth ages 14 and older may participate with certain restrictions at some pantries.
