Charity Navigator, the world’s largest and most trusted nonprofit evaluator, has awarded Gleaners Community Food Bank with its highest 4-Star rating.
“We are so grateful to receive our twelfth four-star rating from Charity Navigator,” said Patrick Schulte, Chief Development Officer of Gleaners. “This badge of honor speaks volumes about the hard work of our team members, the integral partnerships in our community, and the trust our donors and volunteers put in Gleaners.”
How Does Charity Navigator Work?
When making the choice about which food bank to donate to, donors often use Charity Navigator ratings as the gold standard to help guide their decision. The scoring system, which is based on financial health, accountability, and transparency, indicates that donors can “Give with Confidence” to 4-Star charities such as Gleaners. Charity Navigator uses factors including stability, efficiency, sustainability, and integrity to determine each organization’s rating on an annual basis.
Charity Navigator’s website notes “we believe that charities which spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising all perform in a financially exceptional way.” At Gleaners, less than four percent is budgeted toward fundraising, with 94 percent of all donations going directly to food and food programs.
Gleaners’ Impact in Southeast Michigan
Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeast Michigan continues to provide nutritious food to anyone who approaches us in need. This past year, Gleaners distributed a record-breaking 71.4 million pounds of food across five counties in Southeast Michigan: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, and Monroe.
Gleaners provides a combination of fresh produce, milk, dairy, protein, and shelf-stable food items to hungry neighbors in our service region, including children, families, veterans, low-income medical patients, and seniors. To distribute the food efficiently to those who need it most, Gleaners provides food through its strategic community partnerships and vast network of more than 600 agencies, including soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters. Additionally, Gleaners supplements the efforts of our partners by continuing to operate dozens of direct service drive-up mobile distributions in the community.
