Gleaners received a $20,000 grant from the ConAgra Hunger-Free Summer Classic to provide Summer Food Mobile Pantries.
The ConAgra Hunger-Free Summer Classic grant allowed Gleaners to expanded summer feeding and reach more families where they live. In fact, 600 families, who might have struggled more with feeding their families over the summer, were provided a generous quantity of quality food each month to make the summer break easier.
“We are so thankful that we were able to participate in this program. So many families from our community were helped…more than we even realized needed help.”
Gleaners provided a Summer Food Mobile Pantry Program to six low-income public housing complexes selected because they accommodate families with multiple children. Each of the southeast Michigan sites served 100 families and received one mobile pantry each month during June, July and August to boost children’s healthy food intake during months when they could not access school meals.
At each mobile distribution, families received 30 pounds of food: 17 pounds of fresh produce and 13 pounds of canned goods. Over the course of the summer, 48,000 meals were provided to low-income families at these sites. In addition, Gleaners two Youth Ambassadors provided fun and fitness programming for children at the sites, which included supervised games and play.
Thank you to ConAgra for supporting Gleaners’ efforts to solve food insecurity and reach people in need.
