When James signed up for a Gleaners cooking class, his goal was simple: learn how to cook the food he’d been picking up from the food bank. But what he gained from the experience went far beyond new recipes.
As a 69-year-old senior, James wanted to make the most of the fresh produce, lean proteins, and shelf-stable goods he received from Gleaners while also taking control of his health. The class introduced him to new cooking techniques, nutritious recipes, and, most importantly, the knowledge to make informed food choices.
“After the class, I’ve been doing a lot more cooking at home,” he shared. “The nutritional information from that class went beyond [learning to cook]. Everyone needs that nutritional information, not just seniors!”
Like many older adults, James was keeping a close eye on his health—particularly his A1C levels, which indicate blood sugar control. Through the class, he learned how to lower his sugar and carb intake without sacrificing flavor and gained helpful tips for reading nutrition labels.
“Not only am I lowering my sugar and carb intake, but now I know what’s in the food I cook.”
– James, Gleaners Guest
That knowledge has empowered him to take charge of his diet, leading to positive changes in his health. And beyond just the cooking skills, James found real value in the nutritional guidance he received.
“Food is unbelievable, and your class helped me in that journey,” he said. “[The instructor’s] nutritional knowledge is what really gave the class its value.”
James’ story is just one example of how Gleaners’ programs help guests not only access nutritious food but also gain the tools they need to make the best choices for their health. Everyone benefits from a hunger-free community. When our neighbors have the skills and knowledge they need to live healthier lives, communities thrive.
