Gleaners’ Nutrition Education team is dedicated to equipping kids, teens, and adults with the skills they need to prepare nutritious meals and make the most of the ingredients they have on hand.
Recently, the team wrapped up a six-week kids’ cooking class at the Detroit Public Library’s main branch. Over the course of the program, young chefs learned how to create simple, healthy, and delicious meals like spaghetti and meatballs and veggie-packed ramen noodles.
A highlight of the program was the “rainbow smoothies” activity, where the kids whipped up two colorful options: a berry “pink smoothie” and a spinach, kiwi, and apple “green smoothie.” While some were hesitant to try the green option, most ended up loving it even more than the berry version—a fun way to embrace the lesson of “eating the rainbow!”
“They were a very energetic group of kids,” shared Gleaners’ Program Coordinator, Julia Bartlett. “I think they enjoyed it quite a bit—especially getting to be hands-on when it came to the cooking.”
Seven graduates completed at least four of the six classes, leaving with new skills, recipes, and the confidence to recreate healthy meals at home.
