Recently, at a Royal Oak senior living facility, 15 residents concluded a six-week Cooking Matters class, graduating with new culinary skills and earned confidence in the kitchen.
Residents gathered to learn how to prepare simple, healthy meals while building skills they can use every day. From reading nutrition labels to trying new ingredients, each session was designed to make cooking feel more approachable and more enjoyable.
For some participants, the class offered a meaningful step forward. One resident, Carrie, shared that after losing her husband last year, cooking had become difficult. “It’s tough to cook for one,” she said. But by the final class, she was beaming as she received her certificate. “I can’t believe I graduated. I’ve never graduated from anything before!”

Others came looking to sharpen their skills or try something new. “I’d say I know how to cook, but I’m always learning,” said Alan. “This class has been excellent—I like the discussions and the recipes.”
Throughout the series, participants also explored how food choices can support their health. Lessons on topics like sodium, calcium, and reading ingredient labels helped connect everyday meals to overall well-being. As Brenda, another resident, put it: “People need to be aware of what’s in their food… that’s why this class is important.”
And for many, the experience was simply empowering. “This is the greatest class we’ve ever had,” shared Barbara. “I’ve learned so much.”
At its heart, Cooking Matters is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about helping our neighbors feel confident using the food available to them—whether it’s trying something new from a shared pantry table or preparing a meal that supports their health. As the class came to a close, one thing was clear: the impact will last well beyond the final session.
At Gleaners, we believe access to nutritious food goes hand in hand with the knowledge and confidence to use it. Cooking Matters is one of the ways we’re helping seniors build those skills and continue to thrive.
